Final arrangements for the National Schools Regatta:

Please see attached for the National Schools Itinerary. Please note that those departing on Friday will need a packed lunch and a large bottle of water for the trip.

The address of the National Water Sports Centre can be found on the attached map. Our marquee will be on the South Side (The building side of the course): plot 33. When you arrive the National Water Sports Centre, drive past the first two entrances. You will see a Car Park on the left after the main entrance and you can park there. On the map, it is listed as Spectator Car Park B.

The car park will cost £10 per a day with an additional fee of £5 for spectators. Programs are £3.

A few points for parents:

- Please refrain from talking about a result to the girls. The focus of the event is ensuring that girls go out and have a good performance when racing. Good performance = good result. If the girls are too focused on meddling, they forget that a medal is a result of a good performance.

- Only coaches should hand out times for the processionals and the semi finals. Parents should not discuss times (Processional / Semi Finals) with their daughters. It mixes up the messages and the girls get the wrong ideas as to what to do / expect.

- Please do not have them walking to the car to collect things as they need to be where the coaches expect them to be. They are also there to race so they will need to stay off their feet (A somewhat difficult task at times with all the excitement of the event).

- Im afraid parents are not allowed to cycle and can result in a crew being disqualified if they do so. There are however Bus’s where you can watch the races (Adults £2 and children £1).

- Please read the spectator information.

Lastly, please enjoy yourselves. As you know, your daughters have worked incredibly hard to compete at this National Event. I am very impressed with how the girls have worked and trained this year. We cant be under any illusions. This is going to be a competitive event with over 40 entries in some events (J14 4x+ is an example of this). For girls to make the Semi Finals it will be an amazing accomplishment, let alone making the A-Final (top 6). As always the club will aim for the best performance!

Please see the draw for a detailed view of the races (You may not want to print it off though: its 55 pages). The top 12 (2 semi finals) / 16 (3 Semi Finals) crews from the processional will go through to one of two semi finals. The top three of which will progress to the finals. If girls progress, they will do 3 races in the day.

The weather has not been good to us this year! So disappointing! I was so eager to see the girls compete as they have worked so hard and have enormous potential. I would like to reassure you that this is not normal. The boat club will be entering Reading Amateur of the 10th of June so please keep that date free so girls can get some racing.

Further to my update on the 15th of May 2012, there has been no further update regarding the junior regatta. We hope that things will proceed as normal for this weekend. Please keep an eye on the HSOBC website for any updates or changes.

Arrangements for Maidenhead Junior Regatta:

All girls are to use school transport provided. Please DO NOT MAKE YOUR OWN WAY TO THE EVENT AS THIS HAS CAUSED PROBLEMS IN THE PAST! You may leave the event with your parents once you have cleared it with your coaches.

Transport:

Bus will depart at 7:00am latest. Please meet outside the school gate on Headley Way. Please note that there are boarders and girls who are writing exams. YOU MUST NOT MAKE ANY NOISE outside the boarding house!

7:00am: Charlton bus departs from Headley Way.
8:00am: Charlton bus arrives at Maidenhead.
8:00am: Boats rigged.

No girls should go off on their own! They are to gather at the designated meeting points 1h before racing (changed and ready to warm up). Coaches will not chace around after girls so it is there responsibility to ensure they are in the right place at the right time.

9:20am: First Race.

Because of the unprecedented rainfall we have experienced in recent weeks there is a chance that we may have to cancel our Junior Regatta.

Safety has to be the most important criteria when deciding whether the Regatta runs or not. At the moment the river at Maidenhead is flowing at a rate of 95.42 m3/sec.  The Umpires Commission states that it needs to be below 65 m3/sec for us to go ahead.

To make the best decision for the Juniors we will reassess the river conditions daily until Thursday.

Please be assured we have everything in place to run a fantastic regatta but we can only go ahead if it is safe to do so.

As we move into the summer term, the girls will be able to enjoy more time on the river rowing in hopefully sunny weather. It is so exciting to see how everyone has improved, be they a novice or J13. There will no doubt be regattas in the coming weeks in which you can all watch your daughters.
 
As a parent of three rowers one of the most exhilarating events is the National   Schools Regatta, which is held every year in Nottingham. This is an event for the J14s upwards and over the years Headington has excelled in all years.
 
We would like to cordially invite you and your family to join HSOBC at the Headington Marquee for lunch with other rowing parents and to watch some fabulous rowing. It is to be held at The National Water Sports Centre in Holme Pierrepont , Nottingham, NG12 2LU, on the 1st to 3rd of June 2012.
 
It really gives an insight into end result of all the hard work and training that the girls do over the year and the dedication and commitment of the coaches.

Change due to the following reasons:
1) We get an indication if the river is safe for rowing between 11am and 14pm on the Friday before rowing. Following a risk assessment by the water safety officer, river will be unsafe to put novices out on Saturday.
2) Ideal option, as it’s maidenhead next weekend, is to row. I contacted Amelia from Hinksey yet had no answer so plan was to do a hut session 10-12pm in place of the rowing session (updated at 12pm).
3) Amelia got back to me at 4pm and said the lake is only available from 7am to 9pm. After speaking with coaches we came to the conclusion that although it’s not ideal in terms of timings and the cost to the boat club (the club is charged for these sessions, not parents) it would be far more beneficial to row.

If your daughter is now unable to make it, that is not a problem. We are subject to the weather conditions and try do our best for providing opportunities for the girls to row. We understand that some parents have to travel a long way and apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Please note that ALL girls will get a race at Maidenhead regatta. If girls have not been put in a boat for the first race, they will get a race in the 2nd round. Unfortunately we need 5 rowers to make a quad. If we only have 3 left over, those girls will sub into a boat and still have an opportunity to race.

Maidenhead Regatta details to follow this week. Cancellation of the event, if it happens may follow as late as Friday afternoon. Please be aware that they will try let us know as soon as possible but they are subject to weather conditions this week. However you will be glad to hear that a high pressure system is moving in and hopefully decreased chance of rain!
