Pangbourne Small Boats Head: 5th November 2011
Pangbourne Small Boats Head is traditionally an excellent Autumn event for the Juniors. This year the Fours Head took place on the same day as Pangbourne so the Seniors were unable to compete or support this local event.
Little stream, overcast conditions and a following tail wind made for good conditions with some fast times being posted on the day.
The J14s and some J15s (the rest made up senior boats at the fours head) competed at this event. Some excellent results were recorded even though the club is still focusing on developing the group as a whole rather than selecting lead / top boats.
J15 1x: 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 9th our of 19 crews. J15 4x+: 2nd. J14 4x+: 1st and 3rd. J12 2x: 2nd.
Well done to all crews who competed.
Fours Head: 5th November 2011
On Saturday 5th November, 5 Headington crews travelled down to London to race the 5km stretch on the Tideway. All crews had a great race, the top senior quad came 2nd in their section with the 2nd senior quad only 10 places behind. Headington’s 3rd boat came 27th with the 4th senior quad only 5 places behind which is a fantastic performance considering most of the boat were racing people three years older than themselves.
The four, despite a severe collision with the University of York, had a successful race coming 4th with less than 30 seconds between them and the winner.
This was a useful race for the boat club as it has allowed us to see where we are in relation to other crews and it has also given everyone great race experience.

October 2011: Potential Camp
This year 6 girls were invited to attend the World Potential camp at Holme Pierrepont in Nottingham, however only 3 girls (Charlie, Tess and Franny) could attend as there was a trip to Russia for the other 3 rowers.
This is a 3 day training camp where the athletes get the opportunity to benefit from advice from leading coaches and see how their training is going compared to others. The girls were taught what was involved in making it to the final set of GB trials in July where they qualify for the Coupe de la Jeunesse or the Junior Worlds.
Over the three days the girls attended talks about the intensity they should be training at, how to set aims and achieve them and how best to train to benefit from their physiological circumstances. The girls completed at least two water sessions each day in their singles in which they received technical coaching. The girls completed a series or assessments including a 250m ergo, a 5km run, strength and conditioning and a 2km single scull time trial.
Despite the days being long and physically challenging the girls came away with the motivation to step on with their training. They learnt how to take responsibility of their training and the importance of aiming for the top to enable them to achieve. This camp is very beneficial to HSOBC as the girls who attended can pass on what they learnt to the rest of the club. It also allows us to see how individuals are ranked compared to others and therefore we can work out where the whole club would be ranked nationally.
In addition to school events, those who wish to represent Great Britain will now focus on the Early ID trials in Boston in November.

READING SMALL BOATS HEAD HEAD: Sunday the 16th October 2011
The early stages of the season is always an opportunity for Headington to put boats out that are not lead / top boats. The purpose of this is to ensure that the whole squad is developed rather than key individuals. Overall the boat club had some very good results considering the fact that they were competing against schools who were boating top crews.
Headington recorded the following events:
1st and 2nd in the Women’s Junior 15 Quadrouple Sculls.
1st and second in the Women’s Intermediate 2 Doube Scull.
1st and 2nd in the Intermediate 1 Single Scull.
2nd and 3rd in the Intermediate 1 Quadrouple Sculls.
Although coaches were happy with crew boat performances, single sculling performances are an area that need to be developed over the winter. It is only when all individuals improve this skill, do crew boats really make marked improvements.

EVESHAM JUNIOR HEAD: Saturday the 15th October 2011
The J13 and J14 rowers competed at the Eversham Junior Head Race this weekend where they recorded the following results:
Well done to the Women’s Junior 13 Quadruple sculls who recorded 1st and 3rd places in their races.
Congratulations to one of our J12s who was third in the Women’s Junior 13 Single Scull. A great achievement!
The J14s had a successful day with a 2nd and 3rd place recorded in the Women’s Junior 14 Quadruple sculls.
Evesham is a small event with only a few clubs involved. However, it was encouraging to see that these results were recorded with Headington mixing the crews so that the crews demonstrated strength across the squad. The focus at this stage of the season is to continue to develop the junior age groups.
Thank you to all the parents for your support and encouragement. A great day for all involved.
Thanks to parents who sent these photos in.

Welcome BBQ:
For several years now its been a tradition of the boat club to have a BBQ at the beginning of term to allow new parents and novices to meet the rest of the boat club and the coaches informally. We had amazing weather this year (for a change!) and there was a great turn out. Overall the day was a great success with a very successful cake sale (a chance for the rowers to test out which parent cooks the best cakes!) A special thank you should go to the parents who organised the event and parents who provided contributed.
- Helen (Vice Captain of Boats, Juniors).
